MAKE LOVE NOT WAR

Lisístrata is a play against war, a convict apology of peace and harmony amongst men.  In this play, old men who govern the nation and spend in weapons all the money necessary to other ends are attacked. Women, under the influence of Lisístrata, upraise and manage, together, to end a civil war that opposes Athenians and Trojans, and bring home their husbands and sons.
For this purpose they use sex as a weapon: they won’t be possessed by any men till the war is over and peace is established. Performed in 411 BC, this text remains, in many ways, a bold and very up to date text.

Manuel João Gomes, preface to “Lisístrata”
